Senior Legal Assistant

 We are currently looking for a highly skilled legal assistant to become part of our dynamic practice.  This full-time position is available for the right candidate with experience in the areas of Civil Litigation, Personal Injury and Criminal Law.

 This position requires a minimum of 5 years experience. The ideal candidate will be a mature self-starter, who is detail oriented, with excellent drafting and communication skills.

 The ideal candidate must possess the following qualifications:

  • Provide administrative legal support to senior lawyers.
  • Transcribes dictation in a timely and accurate manner. Drafts, types and formats correspondence, memoranda and other legal documents.
  •  Dockets time for incoming mail, faxes and e-mail messages.
  • Ensures printing, copying and binding of documents for use before Courts, tribunals or arbitrator are completed accurately and on a timely basis. 
  • Understands and is able to prepare and file documents in accordance with the Federal Court Rules, the Ontario Rules of Civil Procedures, and other board and tribunal procedures.
  • Serves and files documents for Courts or tribunals when required.
  • Establishes and maintains calendar and deadline reminder systems and ensures that all files are brought forward at the time designated by the lawyer.
  • Opens new files, ensures conflict of interest checks and maintains all client and general files. 
  • Makes appointments for lawyer(s) and ensures that meeting space is available and is reserved.  
  • Receives clients and visitors for meetings with lawyer(s).
  • Processes bills; proofs billing sheets; reviews and edits bills using PCLaw.  Tracks overdue accounts and ensures that payment reminders are sent on a timely basis.
  • Researches and books appropriate travel arrangements for lawyer(s), as requested.
  • Other duties as required.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  •  Knowledge of legal principles and practices through education and related experience.
  • Ability to draft and write legal correspondence and documents.
  • Software knowledge of MS-Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Outlook and PCLaw.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints. 
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with clients, lawyers and staff.

 COMPENSATION

 Competitive Salary plus Benefits.  Salary will commensurate with experience.
